Family Literacy Network

Family Literacy Network is a 501(c)(3) non profit that extends the work of the Texas Reading Institute, Houston’s first and most experienced provider of explicit reading instruction. Explicit instruction “does not leave anything to chance and does not make assumptions about the skills and knowledge that children will acquire on their own” (Torgesen, 2004, p. 5). Our interventions can start with the language skills of a three to four-year old and systematically build the knowledge and skills needed to learn to read.

Beginning Reading (Pre-K and Kindergarten):

Intervention focuses on building the skills that are necessary to start reading with understanding. These include segmenting (what is the first sound in the spoken word at?), letter names, letter sounds, blending sounds to form words, vocabulary, and syntax (oral understanding and use of plurals, past and future tense, comparison, etc.). Preschool screening is the appropriate assessment to guide setting up an individual plan of instruction and support.

Therapy for Struggling Students:

Intervention focuses on helping students in k-college who struggle with reading (accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and/or spelling). Placement assessment is the appropirate assessment to guide setting up an individual plan of instruction and support.

Comprehension Skills:

Intervention focuses on helping students who have difficulty understanding what they read. Students improve comprehension through learning strategies for self-monitoring, for applying text structure, and for “reading between the lines” to grasp the meaning of new words and getting the gist of a text.

Writing:

Intervention focuses on building the organizational skills needed to become effective writers. Students become more proficient writers by learning how to plan before writing. Students become more independent writers by learning strategies for self-monitoring, editing, and revising.

Home support:

To accelerate progress (whether in learning to read, pitching strikes, playing the violin, or swimming the butterfly), daily support is best. We provide training for parents in strategies for home use that accelerate the student’s progress and support reading across school subjects and homework.
